Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium)Datura inoxia stramonium, Datura wrightii Toloache, thornapple, angel's trumpets (Brugmansia), devil's trumpet, moonflower Beautiful trumpet shaped flowering California jimsonweed plants in full bloom pictures, twilight purple accents with white cream center, spiny egg shaped seeds. From the so-called "nightshade" plant (Solanaceae) probably named from the purplish color associated with twilight. Indigenous to Southern California. I may have originally mislabeled or confused the plant names, a refresh in 2026 turned up a secondary reference. Professional photographer Gary Ballard photographed the above wild blooming Datura stramonium flowers on an iPhone while hiking San Diego local trails, parks, backcountry. POISONOUS PLANT WARNING: Jimsonweed has natural toxicities -- irritates skin if handled, poisonous if ingested -- the seeds and all parts of the plant contain dangerous tropane alkaloids such as atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine. If you bring these plants into the home environment or car where pets, children other people may come into contact with them, I recommend reading up on this beautiful but toxic plants to keep everyone safe and healthy....
Originally, I couldn't figure out why my hands were getting itchy and red when I was picking these beautiful wild flowers, putting them in a vase and displaying them in my home. They do not smell so nice! But revive and love water and appear in very good health for several days as unique beautiful natural floral home decor. They grow 1-5 feet in the wild and are common across fields, fencelines, sides of roads, and disturbed areas.
Billy Brady contributed this jimson weed photograph when he was helping me build this indigenous California plant section in 2007. Pictures the plant beautifully in its natural environment. |
